As the years marched on, science fiction grew and changed. It mutated from a subculture with a handful of writers and readers into a wild diversity of creators in all media and fans who consume and remix their favorite imaginary worlds in countless ways. It spread from American and European cultures into all cultures. The two dominant creative approaches of Gernsback and Campbell became merely the chocolate and vanilla in a whole ice cream shop of science fiction flavors. And as the explosion of diverse voices in science fiction grew, so did competition for its identity.
